PRIVATE TOUR – Contemporary Rome – EUR with a cool aperitif

Rome is not only The Colosseum or St. Peter’s Basilica. Here is an original private walking tour that will allow you to visit a district not far from the core of the Eternal City, where XX century rationalist style and some local stone materials characterize its squares, buildings and fountains. An aperitif in a historical café will be your happy ending
Meeting with your private driver in Rome. Transfer to the EUR district by car/minivan and meeting with your private licensed tour guide.
A guided tour wandering around that quarter which was projected during the Fascist period when the city stretched to the South,
as the dictator Benito Mussolini had planned Rome to host the Universal Rome Exhibit, the so-called EUR, and he had chosen that place for its proximity to Ostia sea port.
The event, which was supposed it would have taken place in 1942, was never organized, because the outbreak of the Second World War blocked most of those buildings. It was just during the late 50s that the project was completed to hold the 1960 Olympic Games.
Marcello Piacentini was nominated as the master architect of the region in the late 20s and he developed some plans for long-standing sites throughout the area as well as for temporary pavilions, especially for the above fair.
Rationalism and the classical aestheticism of Ancient Rome combine: excessive proportions of a very big, supreme and authoritarian size that imposes power and absolution.
The EUR district is a masterpiece of the Rationalist architecture, characterized by huge white buildings, mostly made of travertine, the local limestone used to put up buildings such as the Colosseum, as Mussolini wanted this area to become the Third Rome by creating some constructions drawing their inspiration from the ones of the Roman Empire.
The most dramatic landmark is the unmissable Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro, better known as the Square Colosseum. It is a perfect quadrilateral shape, nowadays the seat of the Fendi brand.
At the end of your tour, you will enjoy a relaxing aperitif in an elegant “hidden corner” of a historical café, with the possibility to purchase and smoke a valuable cigar.
