Rome is the cradle of archeology. You cannot help visiting some places of its huge heritage! This tour includes a great variety of infrastructures the Romans made for their health, religion, spare time and hygiene but also to connect the two banks of theTiber. After this complete tour, you will feel like a real Roman, if you taste a refreshing “grattachecca”
Meeting with your private licensed tour guide for an amazing archeological tour.
You will visit the Baths of Caracalla, which are situated near the Appian Way and are one of the largest and most impressive thermae built between 212 and 216 A. D., in accordance with Emperor Caracalla’s will. Even though nowadays only their brick walls and some large collapsed vaults can be seen, the remnants of that splendid archeological park are still preserved.
In the wide precinct of the public baths, people could not only use them but also spend their time doing exercises, visiting the library, walking through the gardens or worshiping the god Mithras and other pagan gods in their temples.

Your walking tour will continue towards the nearby Circus Maximus where biga races took place. Situated between the Aventine and Palatine Hills, it was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and during its later Empire. It could accommodate over 150,000 spectators.

Then you will stop under the portico of the Church Santa Maria in Cosmedin to take a photo to the well-known Mouth of Truth, an enormous marble mask, which is said to bite a liar’s hand whenever put in , and where a famous scene of Roman Holidays movie, with Gregory Peck e Audrey Hepburn, was shot. Step by step you will reach another important archeological venue: the Forum Boarium, the cattle market of Ancient Rome, located near the Tiber among the Capitoline, the Palatine and the Aventine hills. As the original docks of Rome (Portus Tiberinus), it was also an important commercial site as well as a religious centre, housing the Temple of Hercules Victor and the Temple of Portunus (Temple of Fortuna Virilis). Then you will cross the Palatino Bridge in order to admire the ruins of the oldest stone bridge in Rome.First it was a wooden bridge, then a stone one in the 2nd century B. C. It spanned the Tiber, connecting the Forum Boarium with Trastevere. Now it is called Ponte Rotto (“Broken bridge”) because of the ruins of a single mid-river arch.
After this complete tour you might be hot and thirsty… that’s why you would enjoy a refreshing “grattachecca” at one of the most famous drinks stalls along the river. “Grattachecca” is an ice granita flavored with different sweet syrups.
